A handful of English Defence League members assembled in the Crawley Road car park to demonstrate against an Islamic conference today.
Luton Islamic Centre is staging ‘Return of Khilafah and Jihad- the correct understanding’ from Wednesday until Friday at Venue Central in Leagrave Road.
The venue for the EDL demonstration was not confirmed until Tuesday, December 30.
Bedfordshire Police used Section 14 of the Public Order Act 1986 to designate where the EDL could assemble in the interests of minimising disruption to the local community.
There were three police vans at the demonstration.
A spokesperson for Bedfordshire Police said: “There are a few members at the demonstration, it is fairly low key and the situation is under control.”
@lutoncouncil said: “A policing operation is in progress as a small number of EDL supporters have assembled at the Crawley Road car park. Business as Usual!”
