Tackling life expectancy

Life expectancy among Luton women is two years less than the national average of 82.6 years, according to the town’s recently published Public Health Report.

Director of public health Gerry Taylor said: “My aim is to look at this in more detail and determine what we need to do to tackle it.”

Recent early intervention initiatives include a campaign to recruit and train community cancer prevention volunteers to help women spot warning signs earlier and encourage them to speak to their GPs.

Active Luton is offering opportunities for women to get fit and stay healthy through a number of female-friendly clubs, activities and swimming sessions.

AL chief executive Helen Barnett said: “Child care arrangements, transport, self confidence or simply lack of interest are some of the reasons participation levels are low.

“We are doing what we can to break down these barriers to stimulate demand.”

The council is also considering consolidating public health services into a single centre which will make access to support much easier.

The proposals aiming to prevent illness include help with stopping smoking, weight management, exercise, healthy eating and cooking.
