SHOPPERS made more than 750 prayers in the run-up to Christmas at the Prayer Tree in The Mall in Luton.

The prayers formed an integral part of the Midnight Holy Communion Service on Christmas Eve at St Mary’s Church nearby.

The Prayer Tree, which was Canon Nick Bell’s idea, offered busy shoppers the chance to take a few moments to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and dedicate their prayers to loved ones.

Michael Campbell, Town Centre Chaplain for Luton said: “The Prayer Tree has become increasingly popular year on year, and it is a wonderful opportunity to pray for so many people who put their moving and heartfelt prayers on the trees.”

Prayers were written on a small card and attached to a bauble to be placed on the tree.

The tree was so popular that a second tree was erected within a week of the launch to cope.
