A LUTON marathon novice is winding down her training and limbering up as she prepares to tackle her debut London Marathon in aid of a meningitis charity this Sunday.
Carla Greer. 37, will tackle the 26.2 mile course for the first time to raise money for the Meningitis Trust in memory of her brother-in-law, Asa, who she never got to meet as he sadly died from the virus as a teenager.
Carla, who has only been running since she started training with Stopsley Striders in January 2011, said: “He lived in Stopsley and went to bed one night with a headache and feeling a bit sick and the next morning his mum went to wake him up and he collapsed.
“He never regained consciousness.
“I never got to meet him and I think that’s really tragic.”
Carla has set herself a fundraising target of £1,000 having already raised more than £700, but she hasn’t set herself a target when it comes to a finishing time.
She said: “I’m very nervous about it, but training has been going okay.
“I just want to get round the course really, I’d like to do it in under five and a half hours, at least I’d have beaten Jordan’s time then!”
