LUTON Borough Council is to team up with a local authority from Darwen and Blackburn in a bid to tackle right wing extremism.
The two councils are reported to be given £200,000 to set up a national ‘special interest group’ to examine issues surrounding the English Defence League.
The two councils will together explore ways of helping local communities across the country share experiences and best practice and promote locally-driven action.
The announcement comes after the Government last week published its long-awaited paper on creating the conditions for integration within communities across England.
Leader of the Council Hazel Simmons said: “The Government has recognised the work going on here in Luton to combat an extremist minority that causes so much disruption to the peaceful majority.
“I am pleased to see this Council’s work with the police and community leaders to address the problems caused by EDL marches and protests given prominence on the national stage.”
