STAFF at Luton Central Library have been trawling through newspaper clippings and local books to discover more about the history of the library building in St George’s Square, as it celebrates its 50th birthday this year.
Moving from the Victorian building it had outgrown, the new library had a very modern look and it now receives over 1,000 customers a day. The Queen opened the new Luton Central Library in an official opening ceremony on November 2, 1962.
Staff are looking for you to share your library memories. You can do this by completing a form at the library or write in with your memories to: Fiona Marriott, Luton Central Library, St George’s Square, Luton, LU1 2NG. Alternatively send an email to libraryinfo@lutonculture.com. Your thoughts and experiences that you provide may be chosen to be a part of an exhibition at Luton Central Library which is planned for later this year to celebrate the 50th anniversary.
