Luton Borough Council is weighing up plans to charge homeowners £35 for the collection of garden waste, the Herald & Post can reveal.

We have seen a spreadsheet listing the council’s medium-term savings schedule, which sets out the proposal to “introduce charges for the discretionary green waste collection service”.

If agreed on, the plan would see homeowners charged £35 for every season the green waste collection runs.

Brown bins are currently collected fortnightly from March to November.

The spreadsheet indicates a potential start date of April 2016 for the charge, which would add £200,000 annually to the council’s coffers.

Last month LBC hiked its council tax precept for the 16th time in 18 years.

Luton Lib Dems have called the proposal a “monstrous smash and grab raid on hard pressed Luton families”.

Cllr David Franks added: “It is crazy, it would lead to more people flytipping and just tipping garden waste into their black bins.

“It is another outrage. I don’t ever recall so many people getting in touch over a single issue.”

A council spokesperson told the Herald & Post: “This matter has yet to be considered and no decision has been made.”
