Debris scatters as on call ambulance collides with car

A woman has been taken to hospital after an on call emergency vehicle collided with a car in Luton this afternoon.

The ambulance emergency response vehicle was responding to a call when the incident occurred at around 1.50pm on the corner of Cardiff Road/Stuart Street.

Police, ambulance and fire crews were dispatched to the scene, where an elderly woman was left stuck behind the wheel of a Vauxhall Corsa.

She was helped out of the vehicle by firefighters before paramedics put her on a stretcher and took her by ambulance to Luton and Dunstable Hospital.

A East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “One of our rapid response vehicles was involved in a road traffic collision with another vehicle on Cardiff Road in Luton at 1.51pm today.

“An ambulance and an ambulance officer attended one patient a female who was taken to Luton and Dunstable with suspected neck and back pain.

“The vehicle was attending an emergency blue-light call at the time– an ambulance was dispatched to this call.”

Stuart Street was partially closed as debris was cleared from the road.

Police officers diverted traffic from Cardiff Road and Inkerman Street.
