Two friends have raised over £2000 for two charities by taking part in the Budapest to Bamako Rally.

Tim Morris and Jake Scanes decided to take on the challenge to raise money for Make-A-Wish foundation and the charity CRY (Care and Relief for the young).

Tim, of Toddington, lost his younger cousin Digby Davidson to Leukaemia in 2013, he was his inspiration for the challenge.

The friends started their challenge on Friday, January 16, covering 15,000km across 13 countries in 18 days.

The 22-year-old said: “It was a great experience, very tiring but worth it, we were heading off at 5 or 6 in the morning and not getting back until 2 or 3 the following morning.

“We really pushed ourselves and wanted to do all the challenges.

“It is a completely different world out there and it makes you grateful for what you have.”

The pair took part in the challenge in a 4x4, which they then donated to International Needs Burkina Faso, they will use it as an ambulance.

They have beat their target of £2000, raising £2655.

The company Tim works for, Engineering Solution at Commerce Way, Leighton Buzzard, will donate £2100 to International Needs Burkina Faso.

They finished 7th in the rally, two points behind 5th place, they were unable to complete the final two stages.

Tim added: “Unfortunately we had problems with the truck and we felt that if we completed the last two stages it would push the vehicle over the edge and we would not be able to give it to the charity.

“We decided not to do the last two and we would be able to give it to them, when we meet them to do the exchange, my heart went out to them, they really do a lot for the people here and do not have many resources to do it.

“We want to thank everyone that has supported us along the way, we are pleased to have raised so much money for two really important charities.”
