An all girls free school which was due to open in September has been axed by the Department for Education.
In a letter to Luton South MP Gavin Shuker, Lord John Nash said that there had been “insufficient progress” in getting the school up and running before its planned September opening.
It comes days after the Herald & Post reported that the Education Funding Agency had still not submitted a planning application for land it had earmarked for the school on Kingsway, Luton.
A temporary site had also not been identified.
Lord Nash added: “The project has fallen short of the rigorous criteria we have set for free schools.
“I am disappointed but my decision reflects the rigour of the free schools development process and the department’s commitment to ensuring that only projects that represent the best use of public funds will progress.”
