Four police officers under criminal investigation over the death of Leon Briggs are now being probed for potential gross misconduct offences, the Luton News can reveal.

Mr Briggs, of Ashburnham Road, Luton, died in hospital last November after being detained by police under section 136 of the Mental Health Act.

The father-of-two’s death is being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Five police officers and a detention officer remain under criminal investigation.

Four of the officers, a constable and three sergeants, have now been served gross misconduct notices, relating to conferring at the police post incident procedure on the date of Mr Briggs’ death.

This is contrary to the College of Policing’s approved professional practice.

If gross misconduct is proven then the officers couldbe dismissed from the force.

Further criminal interviews with five police officers and a detention officer took place last month.

A second detention officer has also been interviewed as a significant witness of the incident.
