There will be no more paper tax discs from October 1. Motorists will still receive a reminder and have to apply and pay for their vehicle tax. Technology is available for the police, DVLA, insurance industry and Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency to check information online.
DVLA uses the vehicle register to take enforcement action against anyone who has not taxed their vehicle, alongside tools such as automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and wheelclamping.
The latest estimate of vehicle tax dodgers is just 0.6 per cent.
