A representative of the Green Party is backing a petition by shops in Riddy Lane, Luton, to stop a Tesco being built on the site.
Aftab Shah, owner of Early Till Late, started the petition with the other shops because they fear they will lose their businesses if the plans go ahead.
Mr Shah said: “We will all lose our businesses. I have worked here for 11 years. I will be left with nothing.”
Marc Scheimann, representative of the Green Party, is backing the petition. He said: “I am supporting the shops. If the application goes ahead it will cause so much chaos in the area. The owners of the stores on Riddy Lane need to make themselves heard at the meeting and the council should listen to them and reject the application.”
Peter Wakeham, of Bushmead Road, said: “These are my local shops and I don’t want to see a supermarket run them out of town.”
A spokesman for Luton Council said: “We have received a planning application for a single storey extension to the rear of the premises, but there is no indication that Tesco is involved. The application will be considered at next Wednesday’s meeting.”
