Angry couple still have no answers

A couple have made a complaint against Luton Borough Council, after a garage they were renting from them was emptied of precious family items.

Christopher Walker, 34, and Katy Brooks, 27, were using the garage near to their flat on Croft Road.

Ms Brooks said: “It is ridiculous, at first they denied any knowledge of the items and now they have sent us a letter saying they removed a few boxes of house hold waste in November, which is a lie because we were there in January and nothing had been moved.”

A spokesperson for the council said: “In November 2013 we undertook a routine audit, lock change and clear out of our empty garage sites to bring them up to a rentable standard. As part of this routine process we removed household waste and changed the locks to the garage in Croft Road.

“Mr Walker understood that he was using the garage illegally and was advised that he should enter into a formal tenancy agreement. He signed the garage tenancy in February 2014, of which, the rental conditions clearly states ‘garages are not designed to offer secure or watertight storage. The Council has no responsibility for the loss/damage to any vehicle or other items stored in the garage’.

“The resident made a formal complaint regarding items he believed were removed in February 2014. However the Council has not had access to the garage since November and we advised him to contact the police and his insurance company.”

Ms Brooks added: “We accessed the garage with our key in January, the same key we used for 5 years, and everything was still there.”
