An angry shopper has called for Luton Borough Council to do something about the rubbish and mess left on the corner of John Street and Cheapside in the town centre.
The area is near to the council bins and rubbish spills out with people leave unwanted goods near the bins.
The shopper, who does not wish to be named, said: “Often it is not only the rubbish present but human and animal excrement.
“There are rats who have made nests in the bush areas and often walk across the walkways.
“The smell coming from that area is often unbearable.
“We see drunks that loiter on the benches, making that corner a no-go area for many of us. I know a lot of other shoppers that won’t go near that area.
“I have called council refuse services, street cleaning and customer services on many occasions along with other residents of the area and very little gets done.
“I got fed up of complaining and stopped calling as nothing seemed to change but now locals are at their wits end, I feel I should try again and get something done so shoppers can use the area if they need to.”
A spokesperson for the council said: “We received the pubic complaint at 9.38am yesterday (Tuesday). Council policy is to clear any reported rubbish on public property within 48 hours. The rubbish was cleared from the site yesterday.”
