A HEALTHCARE assistant accused of sexually assaulting patients on a hospital stroke ward killed himself after writing a letter protesting his innocence.

Ameet Mohabeer, 28, of Butely Road, Luton, was found dead at his home by a neighbour on September 25. Ten days earlier at St Albans Crown Court he had pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting 14 male patients at the Luton & Dunstable Hospital.

Dunstable Coroner’s Court heard yesterday that Mr Mohabeer had been found with a plastic bag over his head in his bedroom.

He had also taken an overdose of pills which coroner David Morris said would itself have been fatal.

The court heard that Mr Mohabeer’s neighbour had gone to the home he shared with his civil partner, as she was looking after the couple’s dog and needed to get food for it.

She went upstairs to show her daughter the new bathroom suite and found the body of Mr Mohabeer, who she described as “a lovely person”.

A letter to his family was found in the house, said Mr Morris, which said that he was not guilty but that he “couldn’t face up to the publicity and proceedings which were going to be inevitable”.

“He quite clearly intended to take his own life,” the coroner said. “He didn’t see any alternative.”

A verdict of suicide was recorded.

A spokesman for Bedfordshire Police confirmed yesterday that the force was not investigating anyone else in connection with its inquiry into the sexual assaults at the L&D.
