Cancer survior Elizabeth Bailey is on a mission for Luton Borough Council.

She’s been hired as cancer prevention project manager to spread the message about early detection.

“We want to encourage people to look for signs and symptoms and to be more assertive with their GPs if they think something’s wrong,” she explained. “And the best way to achieve this is through peer education.

“We’re keen to break through barriers of fear and embarrassment and deference to the medical profession that occurs among some ethnic groups.

“We’ve recruited and trained a group of volunteers to talk to people like themselves about the importance of checking and screening.

“We’ve put together a properly structured volunteer programme with cancer specific information provided by Macmillan Cancer Support.”

There’s also advice on taking the lead and planning events to coincide with women’s meetings, men’s meetings, church socials and mother and toddler groups.

There’s a welcome workshop at the Town Hall tonight (April 25) from 6pm to 8.30pm for anyone interested in getting involved. Call 01582 548722.
