Being blind is no barrier to achievement, an inspirational speaker told Barnfield students on Friday.

Steve Cunningham, from Blind Vision, visited Barnfield Skills Academy in York Street with his guide

dog Foster to help students understand disability and the importance of a positive mental attitude.

Following his speech in morning assembly, Steve, who lost his sight at the age of 12, worked with smaller groups of students to discuss the importance of aspirations and courage.

He also instilled in the students that determination will help them to make the best of their abilities.

The day included problem solving activities, teamwork and tasks to help build self-confidence.

Students discussed with Steve their career goals and barriers they felt they may face.

Studio school principal Mark Cronin said: “We were delighted to welcome Steve to Barnfield Skills Academy. He is an

inspirational man and our students showed great respect and admiration for what he has achieved.

“His story showed them that nothing is impossible.”
