Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys as Hatters Way will be closed for six weekends for work on the Luton Dunstable Busway.

Hatters Way will be closed between its junctions with Dunstabel Road and Chaul End Lane from 5am on Saturday - 10pm on Sunday on the weekends of February 9 and 10, February 23 and 24, March 2 and 3, March 9 and 10, March 16 and 17, and March 23 and 24.

On four of these Saturdays Luton Town FC have home games at Kenilworth Road in the Conference Premier Division.

The Hatters host Forest Green on February 9, Mansfield on February 23, Hereford on March 9 and Tamworth on March 23.

Hatters Way will remain open as usual on the weekend of Saturday February 16 when Town welcome Millwall in the fifth round of the FA Cup, and the Council will review its closures of Hatters Way if there are further cup games to be played at home.

Councillor Dave Taylor said: “Throughout the busway construction programme works have been scheduled to minimise disruption, and this has included avoiding clashes with Luton Town’s home matches wherever possible. On this occasion however no other solution can be achieved.

“The Council and its main contractor Bam Nuttall had planned works in Hatters Way over two clear weekends in January which were disrupted by the snow and freezing temperatures. Concrete pouring is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions and this work could not be undertaken because it would not have set correctly. Now it is a priority that the works are carried out promptly.

“We will do everything possible to keep traffic moving as freely as possible, including changes to traffic light timings.”

A signed diversion route will be in operation via Dunstable Road and Chaul End Lane. Motorists are advised to allow extra time for journeys in the town centre, or consider using alternative methods of transport where possible.

Subject to weather conditions permitting, the closures will allow for work to lay the busway’s concrete beams and pads, and carry out works on the gabion wall.
