A Luton school chef won the praise of judges with her delightful dessert at the regional final of School Chef of the Year 2013 yesterday (Weds).
Doreen Peacock, who works at Lealands High School, received a highly commended for her creation: pear and blueberry crunch and vanilla sauce.
Five chefs from Luton, Flitwick, Norwich, Watford and Cambridge took part in the East of England final at Barnfield College.
The overall winner was Tanya Watkin, of Woodland Middle Academy in Flitwick.
Normally the judges only award one prize, but Mrs Peacock’s dessert, and the main course cooked by Claire Bishop from Norwich, were deemed so good that highly commended awards were also given out.
“Both highly commended winners’ dishes were highly praised as being well executed, tasty and of a very high standard,” said a spokesman.
Anne Bull, chair of organisers LACA (Local Authorities Caterers Association) Chair said: “School chefs are passionate about the role they play in educating young people about food and healthy eating”.
