LITTLE LEARNERS are being inspired to become safety ambassadors in their own homes as part of a Luton primary schools safety initiative.
The Safety Squad – comprising representatives from various organisations including Luton Fire and Rescue Service (BLFRS) and Luton Borough Council – encourages children to be safety-conscious through a series of interactive sessions at their schools.
Members wear brightly coloured tabards – thanks a to a donation from Vauxhall – while they’re on site.
Fire safety, road safety, first aid and how to identify situations that could affect their personal safety are on the agenda for pupils aged nine to 11 in Years 5 and 6.
The decision to take the Squad into schools has been a big success, according to BLFRS community safety team spokeswoman Jocelyn Goodman, who said: “It means we are able to reach many more children than in the past.”
Tennyson Road Primary School headteacher Hilary Power added: “These sessions are vital for building awareness among children and they complement the personal social health education programme.”
