CROWDS lined the streets to see the Olympic flame in Luton this morning (July 9).
Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton carried the flame from St George’s Square, then spent time meeting fans and posing for pictures once the torch had moved on to Dunstable.
The Olympic flame spent last night in Luton after arriving at a welcome ceremony in Pope’s Meadow.
Torchbearer David Cole who carried the flame into Pope’s Meadow said: “This is one of the best days ever, the best of my life.”
The former Luton Sixth Form College teacher, 71, has lived in Luton for 48 years.
He told the audience: “Luton has been very very good to me the past 48 years. It gets a lot of bad press which it doesn’t deserve but it has an awful lot going for it. Well done Luton.”
Mr Cole lit a celebration cauldron on stage with his torch, and was greeted by Mayor of Luton Councillor Syd Knight and Olympic medallist Judy Grinham.
