Mum’s praise for quick action over ‘unsafe’ park

A LUTON mum has praised Luton Borough Council’s quick response after she raised concerns over the safety of a children’s playground.

Amy Desir complained to Luton Borough Council after her two-year-old son slipped and grazed his forehead last week while playing on a new children’s play area in Stopsley Park, off Ashcroft Road.

Ms Desir said that the slippery sloped surface leading up to a slide has become notorious for children falling over and hurting themselves.

She said: “People always know where you are talking about when you mention the park where your children always slip over.

“The enclosed play area for younger children would be fantastic if it wasn’t for the dangerous main climbing frame.

“The floor of the climbing frame is so slippery that young children cannot get up the access ramp unaided and when they get to the top there is another long slope which ends in a sheer drop.

“We were there over an hour and I watched as every single child who tried to get up the access slope slipped over, as well as some of the adults trying to help them.

“The raised ‘planks’ to help with the grip are too far apart for a small child’s stride and the sides of the ramp have gaps in them wide enough for a child to fall through.”

But following an email complaining about the play area on Thursday morning, Ms Desir was delighted to get a response the same day from Council staff who arranged a meeting with park services technicians yesterday (Tuesday).

Ms Desir said: “They’ve been absolutely brilliant.”

A Town Hall spokesman said yesterday: “The safety of children playing in our playgrounds is paramount, therefore we carry out regular inspections to identify if there are any areas of concern. To date we have not received any other complaints about the play equipment.

“We have spoken to the complainant and have arranged to meet her on site today (Tuesday) with the playground inspector so that she can clearly identify specific issues she has with the equipment.

“The Stopsley Park play area is suitable for children aged between four and nine.”
