A CRACKDOWN on ‘right to buy’ fraud is taking place to ensure the privilege of council tenants being able to buy their homes is not abused.
Luton Borough Council says it recently discovered a council tenant was trying to cheat the system and applied to buy their home when they were not even living there.
Under the scheme, secure council tenants can buy their home at a price lower than the full market value of the property.
Luton Borough Council says any council tenant renting out their home is in breach of their tenancy agreement.
Councillor Tom Shaw, responsible for housing said: “We are absolutely committed to taking action against people who make fraudulent applications for Right to Buy.
“We will take every step to evict those involved in this kind of activity so that families in genuine need can be housed.”
