CELEBRATED Luton angler Charlie Olney has died in Southampton, aged 105.
He was made a life member of Luton Angling Club where the Charlie Olney Centenary Cup was dedicated to him on his 100th birthday.
He loved his allotment and was a dedicated Hatters supporter.
His daughter Marie Peck described the former stoker as a forward-thinking workaholic with a wicked sense of humour.
She said: “His chair is empty and I’m absolutely devastated.”
The great great grandfather had a passion for sport and was a keen member of the angling club team for more than 40 years.
Marie recalled: “He really earned his place – he was there in all weathers.
“He loved nothing more than sitting by the bank fishing from early morning to late evening.
“He couldn’t swim and fell in several times, always in January and always wearing several layers of clothes.”
Charlie went to Dunstable Road school and married Luton millinery assistant Gwen Morris in 1936.
They had two daughters, Marie and Jeannette.
Marie said: “He was very independent right to the end.”
