A man has been jailed for 18 years for raping two young girls in Luton during the 1970s.

Edward McCulloch, 76, of Spandow Court, Luton, was convicted of a catalogue of offences including rape and the indecent assault of a third girl.

He was arrested in 2013 after one of the victims came forward to report the abuse.

McCulloch, who had been jailed for eight years in 2003 for a number of other

offences including raping another girl, was charged with a total of 12 offences.

He denied all charges but was convicted following a trial at Luton Crown Court.

He was jailed for a total of 18 years on Friday, 30 January, given a Sexual Offences Prevention Order and was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

Detective Inspector Liz Mead, from Bedfordshire Police Public Protection Unit, said: “McCulloch is a dangerous offender who preyed on young children.

“Those victims have shown incredible bravery in coming forward to give evidence against him and bring him to justice.

“He put them through a further ordeal by denying all of the charges, but thankfully the jury saw through his lies.

“This case shows that we will relentlessly pursue those who have abused children in the past. Even if you committed offences 30 or 40 years ago, we will come after you and bring you to justice.

“Protecting vulnerable people is a priority for Bedfordshire Police and we hope this case will encourage other victims to come may have been victim to such criminality.”
