A minor earthquake which hit the Midlands last night was felt as far away as Luton, according to the British Geological Survey.

At 10.25pm last night an earthquake hit Oakham, in Rutland, measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale.

The British Geological Survey has said that it had 1,400 reports from people who felt the tremors– including one from a residence 56 miles away in Luton.

It was also felt as far as Doncaster and Grimsby to the north and Dudley to the west.

Eyewitnesses closer to the epicentre reported seeing buildings shake.

One told the British Geological Survey it “sounded like a really large bomb had just gone off”.

The earthquake is the second to hit the UK in two days.

The first was recorded in Winchester, Hampshire, on Tuesday– hitting 2.9 on the Richter scale
