TWO men were stabbed and three police officers injured in a street brawl in Luton town centre in the early hours of yesterday.

Gordon Street and surrounding roads were cordoned off by police as they investigated the crime scene.

Blood, trainers and a T-shirt lay on the steps of nearby Aldwyck House throughout the morning.

One man, aged 20, was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and another, aged 18, was arrested on suspicion of affray.

Det Chief Insp Steve Vesztrocy, leading the investigation into the incident, said: “Bedfordshire Police will not tolerate violence in our county.

“It would appear approximately 100 people were in the area at the time of the disorder with only a handful of people directly involved.

“We will now continue our investigation and review all CCTV. Anyone identified committing an offence should expect a visit from Bedfordshire Police in the near future.”

The disorder was reported to the police by CCTV operators at 3.09am.

Ambulance crews from Luton and Stopsley attended the scene following reports of a disturbance at 3.14am and treated two men, believed to be in their 20s, for stab wounds, which are not thought to be serious.

Ambulance service spokesman Gary Sanderson said: “Two men received injuries during the disturbance and following treatment and stabilisation at the scene by the ambulance crews, they were taken to the Luton & Dunstable Hospital for further care.”

The East of England Amublance Trust’s hazardous area response team (HART) also attended the scene.

The three police officers who were slightly injured suffered cuts and bruising.

Nighclubs Liquid & Envy and Chicago are in Gordon Street, although Liquid & Envy was not open on the night.

A spokesman for Atmosphere Bars and Clubs, who run Chicago, said: “We understand there was an altercation in the street that occurred after Chicago’s closed. We are assisting police with their inquiries.”

An Aldwyck House spokesperson said: “We are not aware of any incident and have not been contacted.”

Bedfordshire Police are appealing for witnesses to the disorder to come forward.

Anyone with information should contact Bedfordshire Police on 101 or text information to 07786 200011.
