Two Luton based policemen have been honoured at a ceremony to celebrate the work of officers and staff from the Joint Protective Services.

Sergeant Chris Umpleby was one of four officers commended for trying to save the life of a man armed with a shot gun who was threatening to kill himself in Leagrave Park in January 2011.

After an 18 hour stand off the man killed himself.

Assistant Chief Constable for the Joint Protective Services Command, Jeff Hill said: “All officers on this operation performed their duties in the most testing and difficult of circumstances. Some officers however clearly went far and beyond what is reasonably expected of them in an attempt to save this male’s life.”

PC Mark West was honoured for the part he played in an incident in which a man had been stabbed in Luton on July 22, 2014.

PC West was at home when he became aware of a noise and saw two males run past his house. Shortly afterwards he heard a man had been stabbed nearby. Believing the males he had seen to be involved, he went looking for them, located them close by and directed colleagues to the location. Both were arrested.
