The Mayor of Luton officially opened Hafeez Court, a new block of flats in Marsh Farm, on Friday, October 31.

Luton Community Housing has built two one-bedroom and six two-bedroom flats on the site of a previously derelict garage site in Thricknells Close. The council contributed the land and £160,000 towards the £800,000 development.

Luton North MP Kelvin Hopkins joined the new tenants and officials from both organisations to celebrate the achievement.

Facilities at Hafeez Court include individual exterior stores, a bin area, external drying facilities, communal areas and designated car parking.

Lynda Rees, CEO of Luton Community Housing, said: “We are delighted to have been able to partner with the council again to bring these derelict garage sites back into use and provide much-needed affordable family housing for local residents.

“Once again, we worked in partnership with VE Parrott builders and Triad Design to produce a high quality development with very few problems. Goring Berry and Philip Harvey and Associates were also part of this successful team.”

It has been names after former Luton Community Housing (LCH) chairman Mr Bashir Ul Hafeez, in appreciation of his commitment and long service to delivering housing to families in need.

Councillor Tom Shaw said: “With very limited land available to us and an ever increasing demand for housing in the town, we will continue to do whatever we can to provide new homes for our residents.

“We were delighted to team up with LCH on another innovative project to transform empty garage sites into fantastic new homes. Just as importantly these schemes help us to regenerate previous unsightly areas to make them more attractive for people already living there.”
