Adoption Information

The council is hosting an adoption information event on Thursday, October 16, at The Leagrave Centre, Strangers Way, from 6.30pm till 8pm.

There will be experienced social workers and adoptive parents available to answer any questions.

The council wants to find permanent homes for children of all ages, backgrounds, ethnicities and religions as well as sibling groups.

Taeeba and her husband from Milton Keynes decided to adopt as they thought it would be an amazing opportunity to give something back.

They already had their own child and adopted a 13-month baby boy three years ago and are currently in the process of adopting a second child.

She said: “We were pleasantly surprised about the whole adoption process, we were expecting it to be very intrusive and challenging, but the social worker put us at ease and made it seem quite easy, just like having a friendly chat, everything ran very smoothly. We received a lot of support in preparing us for adopting a child, which gave us an idea of what to expect.

“We were slowly introduced to our son and spent time with his foster carer so we knew his likes and dislikes. He had also seen our pictures and we created an interactive talking book featuring our voices and pictures. I even had to sleep with a toy which was given to him so that he could recognise my scent. This all helped him to settle in very easily into our home.”

To adopt you must be over 21, have lots of patience, be flexible and energetic.

You do not have to own your home, have a job or be under 40 to adopt a child, you do not have to be married, be in a relationship, or heterosexual.

Councillor Waheed Akbar said: “Adopting a Luton child will not only change their life for the better but will also change yours too. So call the Luton Adoption Team now, or come along to the adoption information event on Thursday.”
