Bringing selfless service to Luton

Keech Hospice Care is one of many local charities that will benefit from SEWA Day on Sunday (October 5).

SEWA, an old Sanskit word, means selfless service – sacrificing time and resources for the benefit of others without wanting anything in return.

According to the movement’s UK outreach co-ordinator, Luton accountant Ravi Shah, volunteers will be undertaking a variety of tasks at the hospice including painting and decorating, gardening, cleaning the pool area, doing inventories and organising mailing.

He said: “We’re encouraging people to come forward and volunteer. There’s still time to make a positive difference to the lives of others, whether it’s helping a neighbour with shopping, feeding the homeless or simply taking part in a street clean-up for a more environmentally friendly society.”

He said more than 100,000 volunteers in 25 countries will be donating their time and energy. Two of the projects in Luton are cricket matches for children with learning disabilities and a healthy eating scheme.
