The Luton Neighbourhood Watch held its Annual General Meeting with its members on Tuesday, September 30.

They have been working in partnership with the local policing team, Beds Fire and Rescue and the council to make Luton a safer town.

Deborah Hopkins, steering group member of the Neighbourhood Watch, said: “It has been a year of progression and building partnerships.

“We all need to work together to keep the neighbourhoods safe.

“Our partnership with the PCSOs has improved which means we can communicate with them and raise issues that residents have.”

Superintendent David Boyle works with local policing operations in the south of Luton, he said: “Community policing has improved, we have 1050 people who volunteer their time in the arena of of policing and community safety.

“We want to work with the group and identify solutions to our problems collectively, I think that’s the way forward in terms of policing the town.”

Leader of the council, Hazel Simmons, sent a letter in her absence, it read: “I am very pleased to have worked with the group over the year, John keeps me informed about local issues on a regular basis. We need to work together on community safety,”

Service operational commander for Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue, Simon Barker, said: “Our partnership with the police is improving, we know where the people are that are at most risk of fire, and they are usually the ones that are also vulnerable to crime.

The police van does us a favour with home fire safety checks and we also do referrals for security, it is a good partnership, that is how we have to promote it, how can we add value to our other services. as a town we are making strides in the right direction.

Ms Hopkins added: “If you want to make a difference in your area, this is a great opportunity to get involved, the Neighbourhood Watch team are always looking for more members.”
