An Active Luton exercise programme for people affected by cancer has been able to increase its team, thanks to funding from Macmillan and a Sport England grant.

The programme, run by Active Luton, Luton and Dunstable University hospital and Macmillan Cancer Support, is aimed at improving the physical and mental wellbeing of cancer patients.

The grant and funding has allowed Active Luton to appoint a new health and wellbeing officer, Emma Collins.

She said: “I want to make sure that anybody who has been treated for cancer feels they can access the programme and reap the benefits of exercise after treatment.

“I would also like to extend the range of sports we can offer as part of the programme. We currently have gym, swimming, exercise classes and golf. I’d like to think outside of this and maybe introduce activities such as rambling and walking football to appeal to even more people.”

Roy Crouch, of Barton Hills has used the programme, he said: “The Active Luton programme really has changed my life.

“My cancer was treated with surgery which has left me currently unable to walk.

“After such drastic treatment I felt very low emotionally but taking part in the exercise programme has given me focus and motivation as well as being a huge physical help.”
