Internet shoppers will be able to pick up packages from Luton’s Royal Mail delivery office on a Sunday for the very first time this week, as part of a trial extension of opening hours.

Currently the Dunstable Road office is only open six days a week, but it will be opened from 12pm to 4pm this Sunday to make it easier for customers who are not at home during the day.

The Luton branch is one of 100 across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to be included in the trial, as it currently deais with a very high volume of parcels throughout the week.

Opening hours at the Luton delivery office could permanently be extended, should the one-off on Sunday prove successful.

Operations director Tony Fox said: “We are continuing to be more customer responsive and provide more options for people to receive items they have ordered online.

“I am delighted to pilot Sunday afternoon opening at around 100 of our delivery offices across the UK with the highest parcel volumes, including Luton.”

In June, Royal Mail Group’s express parcels business, Parcelforce Worldwide, also launched a Sunday delivery service for online shoppers through participating e-retailers.

The service is available to contract customers across the UK.
