Debate is raging over plans for traffic calming measures in the Putteridge Road area of Stopsley.

Residents, councillors and council officers spent Saturday discussing ideas, including reducing the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph on a number of residential roads.

Councillor Jenny Davies and Councillor Michael Dolling of Stopsley ward both expressed concerns there would not be sufficient police resources to enforce a 20mph limit, but said they are pleased so many residents are taking part in the consultation.

Councillor Dolling said: “Something needs to be done because a lot of speeding goes on in the area. Not by the general public but those lads who drive around at night. It causes a lot of damage but there are other ways we can deal with it.”

Stopsley resident Gareth Owens said many people felt the area being looked at was too big, and said it was “silly” and “unnecessary” to spend public money on traffic calming for so many roads- up to30.

Councillor Davies said: “The people who live in the place are the experts and you have to listen to those experts. They are the people who will live with these changes and who will pay for them out of their tax. I do not want a repetition of what happened with Mountgrace Road a few years ago, where they didn’t have a proper consultation and ended up having to change everything back again.”

The consultation continues.
