College plans to expand

Plans to build two new classrooms at Luton Sixth Form College have been submitted.

The rooms would be added into the roof void above the existing drama studio, which is to the right of main reception at the front of the building.

The proposed extension will help the college cater for increasing student numbers; the last two academic years has seen the number of youngsters enrolling rise by eight and six per cent respectively.

The college currently has around 2,600 students and the two general-purpose rooms will provide space to teach an additional 60 students at the Bradgers Hill Road campus.

Tony Whitehead, head of estates management at the college, said: “It’s an exciting project for the college and it’s always good to be providing more facilities for our students.

“The classrooms will fit within the boundaries of the building as it is at the moment. It won’t be any bigger or taller than the current footprint.”

An application was submitted to Luton Borough Council earlier this month.

If planning permission is granted, it is hoped construction work will begin in the May half-term break, and be completed in time for the start of the new academic year in September.
