£200,000 Wardown bridge work is in suspension

Residents are campaigning for the historic Wardown Park suspension bridge to be repaired and re-opened.

The bridge, believed to be the smallest single span suspension bridge in the country, was closed for the Love Luton festival in July last year amid fears it wouldn’t be able to hold the high numbers of people expected over the weekend.

Repairs to the 105-year-old bridge, in order for it to re-open, will cost around £200,000, and The Heritage Lottery Fund have said they would be happy to provide the money if five per cent of the funding can be matched – about £11,000.

The petition, signed by 600 people so far, will be discussed at the Central Luton Area Board meeting on April 15.

Barry Neale from Luton Heritage Forum said: “The Forum is not responsible for the petition but I am delighted to hear that people are taking an interest in Luton’s heritage. We all know how nice Wardown Park is and it’s a shame if public expenditure cuts (which are necessary) cause us to lose things like the bridge. It’s a part of our history and needs to be protected.”

The Area Board are expected to support the petition.
