A man who died after a tree fell on him has been named as Rodney Noel Samuels.
The 73 year old of Bagwicks Close in Luton was collecting firewood in the wooded area known as Rotten Corner on Leagrave Common on Wednesday (April 3).
Emergency services were called to the open space between Sundon Park Road and Marsh Farm at 12.45pm, but Mr Samuels was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of death was listed as asphyxiation and compression by tree.
The land is owned by Luton Borough Council and a spokesperson said: “The council wishes to express its deepest condolences and sympathies to the deceased’s family.
“As is the case with all serious incidents and accidents on its land and premises, the council has begun an investigation for referral to the Health and Safety Executive.
“The council’s parks are maintained regularly and action taken immediately if any issues are identified following health and safety inspections. There had been no issues reported about trees at Leagrave Park and the area has been re-assessed as safe and reopened to the public this afternoon.
“Initial findings suggest this incident was a tragic accident, however it would be inappropriate to comment further until the full facts have been ascertained.”
