Two horses had to be rescued after a huge blaze took hold at a riding school in Luton last night.

Firefighters were called to the Sunshine Riding School in Warden Hill just after 11.30pm, to reports a barn full of hay was on fire.

Riding school owner Geoff Lambert told Luton Today: “The barn has been totally destroyed. Luckily no animals were injured and everyone is safe.

“Police are looking into the cause of it this morning but all they’ve been able to tell me so far is that it’s suspicious.”

All of the horses were led out into a field, away from the smoke. One stable, housing Geoff’s wife Deborah’s horse, Ebony, was damaged by the blaze.

“The barn is just a few feet away from Ebony’s stable. The end wall was damaged significantly but she’s fine. She’s quite a placid girl but she didn’t like last night.

“Deborah has been comforting her this morning, although I’m not sure who’s been comforting who really.

“The other horse that was rescued, Trigger, has had six or seven girls pampering him this morning.”

Fire crews stayed at the scene until 3am, and police scenes of crime officers and a fire investigation team are this morning trying to establish the cause of the blaze.
