A WOMAN who spent £599 on a new TV was furious that PC World cancelled her order without telling her because she lived in a ‘high risk area’.
The angry shopper, who does not wish to be named, lives at Marsh Farm in Luton and ordered the new television on New Year’s Day online from PC World.
The money was taken out of her bank account immediately, and on Wednesday, January 4 she received a phone call from PC World asking her to confirm some bank details, but as she was on a busy road on her way to work and could not talk she asked them to call back in 15 minutes.
The woman said: “They never called again but I later phoned to find out where my television was and they told me they had cancelled the order because it is a ‘high value product’ and I live in a ‘high risk area’.
“I am fuming. If that was the case why did they take my money when I placed the order? Why am I high risk? I have a legitimate job. They didn’t even bother to speak to me, I had one phone call when I couldn’t hear the lady and they never bothered to try and call again.
“I don’t want to buy from them now, I want a refund. My bank said even if they refund the money it will take seven to ten working days for it to be back in my account. I’m livid.”
A PC World spokesperson said: “We would like to apologise to (the customer) for the inconvenience of this incident but it was done in good faith in an effort to protect her from potential credit card fraud and having investigated the case we are very happy to reinstate her order if she would like us to.
“We unfortunately have a history of fraudulent use of credit cards in the March Farm area, so there are processes in place to protect our customers from fraudulent use of their credit cards.”
The spokesperson said the customer’s address could not be confirmed so she was phoned to check she ordered the TV and that it was her credit card, but she could not respond fully. They tried to call back but she didn’t answer the phone.
They said: “On this basis, and as we have a history of fraudulent orders being delivered to the Marsh Farm area, we had no option but to cancel the order.”
