A couple are spending their holiday in Cardiff instead of the Mediterranean after getting stuck in a lift at Luton Ibis Hotel and missing their flight.

Lynne and Cai Larsen from Caernarfon, North Wales, were trapped in the Spittlesea Road hotel lift from about 4am - 5.30am on Monday with another couple.

Despite pressing the alarm and phoning reception no one came to help and they had to call the fire servicethemselves to be rescued.

Lynne, 54, said: “I’m angry at the hotel because they didn’t offer any assistance and said we couldn’t speak to a manager until Wednesday. The receptionist told us it was “an act of nature”.

“We’re so disappointed, we’d been planning our holiday since last Easter. We made sure we were within 500 yards of the terminal the day before. We didn’t expect to be stuck in a lift for an hour and a half.

“It took a while to sink in really, it’s a bit surreal. We’re in Cardiff now and we might go down to Barry Island, look at the sea and pretend it’s the Mediterreanan, but the temperature is a bit different!”

An Ibis spokesperson said: “We apologise for the inconvenice. We’re looking into it and will be in contact with the guest to see how we can help.”
