A man from Luton pleaded guilty to ten counts of benefit fraud and was ordered to repay over £16,000.

Mohammed Anwar Hussain, 43, of 159 Birdsfoot Lane, plead guilty to fraud totalling £16,708 at Luton Magistrates Court on March 7.

The court heard how Hussain had failed to declare that he and his wife held several bank accounts.

By failing to disclose this information, Hussain fraudulently received income support, council tax benefit and housing benefit.

Hussain was sentenced to six months imprisonment suspended for 12 months, and ordered to repay the overpayment in full.

He also has to carry out 300 hours of unpaid work.

Sue Codd, Principle Investigations Officer at the Council, said: “The benefits system is for people who genuinely need support, not for those looking to make extra money on the side.

“If you are claiming benefits of any kind, failing to tell us about your full circumstances could lead to you being prosecuted.”

The Council welcomes detailed information from the public about benefit fraudsters and encourages people to contact the fraud hotline in confidence on 0500 500 777 or email fraud@luton.gov.uk
