Volunteers supervised by local charity Groundwork Luton & Bedfordshire will be creating a new community orchard on the open space at Runley Road in Dallow by planting eight fruit trees – four apple, two pear and two plum; all old Bedfordshire varieties today.
The orchard planting will be the final stage of a partnership project commissioned by Luton Borough Council which has seen the green route through the open space in Runley Road transformed from an uninviting overgrown and heavily fly-tipped area to one which provides a clear and accessible link with the footpath network to Dallow Downs and Dallow Road.
Funding for the project, provided through the Council’s ‘Your Say Your Way’ programme which enables communities to help decide local priorities, paid for the initial clearance works and for renewing the flight of steps leading to the downs.
Additional support has come from The Conservation Volunteers, Bedfordshire Probation Trust, and the Council’s parks and highways teams.
The planting will take place between 11am and 12noon.
