A murder investigation is underway after a woman from Luton was killed in Brighton on Sunday (Ferbuary 17).
The 24 year old, named locally as Samantha Medland, was stabbed in Queen Square in Brighton at around 8.45pm and was taken to hospital but died a short time later.
A 25-year-old man was arrested at the scene by police on suspicion of murder.
He is currently receiving treatment under police guard in hospital for stab wounds to his body which are not believed to be life-threatening.
Detective Inspector Wendy Burton of Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team said: “The victim and arrested man are known to each other and was not a random attack. It took place in the street in Queen Square and was witnessed by passing members of the public and local residents. We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident so we can build a picture of what has taken place.
“Our thoughts are with the family of the victim as we investigate this incident.”
Family and friends of Samantha are holding a minute’s silence in her memory this morning, and tributes are being posted on social networking sites.
It is believed Samantha recently moved to Peacehaven near Brighton with her husband.
Anyone who witnessed the incident and has not yet spoken to police, or anyone with information which may assist police with their enquiries is asked to contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting Operation Westfield or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
