Witnesses to a shooting in Farley yesterday are urged to come forward as police hunt two men who fled the scene on foot.

Gun shots were fired near a children’s play area in Russell Street at about 2pm, leaving one woman with a hand injury.

The woman was the passenger in a silver BMW when her partner became involved in an argument with two men at the junction of Wellington Street and Russell Street.

When asked if the offenders were known to the victim, or if the incident involved drugs, Detective Inspector Ruth Dodsworth said: “We keep an open mind.”

She added: “Early investigations suggest that this is not a random attack.”

Police are looking for two men who are both described as black and fled the scene on foot towards Stanley Street.

Police can’t confirm if the victim’s wound was caused by a bullet, but she was injured during the incident and shrapnel was found embedded in her hand.

Police remained at the scene this morning.

DI Dodsworth said: “With any offence involving a fire arm we obviously take the investigation very seriously.

“It’s very important we properly search the area for any evidence of the offence that occured and make sure any forensic evidence is recovered.”

Nearby schools Hillborough Junior School and Chapel Street Nursery were open as normal, and DI Dodsworth said police are increasing patrols in the area to reassure the community.
