Hundreds of residents turned out last night to hear how best to oppose a gipsy site at the edge of their village.

The hall at Harlington Upper School was packed for the meeting to discuss the potential site, which has been included on Central Bedfordshire Council’s long list of locations for new authorised gipsy and traveller sites.

Mary Walsh, who chairs Harlington Parish Council, outlined the ground residents should object on, including poor access and pollution.

Councillor Tom Nicols, Harlington’s representative on Central Beds Council, told the meeting: “The fact is, this site is not appropriate.”

The part of the site was in the parish of Westoning, which council leader James Jamieson represents.

He said Councillor Jamieson, who lives in Maulden where another potential site is located, was “positive” about the idea of the Harlington/Westoning site.
