A distressed elderly man who lives alone is being terrorised by teenagers who hang around outside his flat.

Basil Wolfe, 73, of Butterworth Path in High Town, has called the police on numerous occasions about a gang of youths who sit in the communal area of his block of flats tormenting him. He lives in a council flat and says the anti-social youths do not live there.

Mr Wolfe said: “It’s horrendous. They are sat there on the stairs drinking, possibly doing drugs, shouting, swearing, having sex on the newspapers on the floor. I can’t get into my flat because they block the way and if I try to get past they threaten to kill me. I told them soon they won’t have to, I’ll be going to do it myself.”

Mr Wolfe said he believes the youths got into the block because the security door is broken.

He said: “I’ve reported these things again and again but nothing is done. I still have problems with people having sex in the bin chutes and paint cupboards which the council won’t lock properly.”

Police confirmed they were called out to Butterworth Path twice on January 13.

A spokesperson said: “We got the first call at 17.42, about a group of youths in a communal area of a block of flats. There were males and females causing problems. Our officers went to the scene but the youths made off. A search of the area failed to locate them. Later on they returned and we were called out again. We spoke with them and offered advice, and they moved on.”

A Luton Council spokesperson said: “We are working closely with Mr Wolfe and the police to find the best way to resolve the issue.”

The council would not answer questions about security in the flats, the broken intercom which the youths had allegedly spat on, or enquiries about the bin chutes and paint cupboards not being locked.
