THE average family throws away nearly £50 worth of food a month, and are being encouraged to reduce this waste by loving their fridges.
Luton Borough Council’s ‘Love your fridge’ campaign is urging people to make the most of the food they buy with a few simple steps.
Things like keeping the fridge at less than five degrees Centigrade and storing the right types of food in there can dramatically reduce food waste.
Councillor Dave Taylor said: “Not only is this good for your pocket, but it also helps the environment by reducing the amount your household throws out.”
Most fruit and vegetables keep longer when stored in the fridge, but bread should be kept in a bread bin or a cool, dark store cupboard.
Other top tips for keeping food fresh for longer include:
- keeping food in the fridge covered whenever possible
- rewrapping food like cheese and ham in clingfilm after opening
- freezing food that you won’t eat before its ‘use by’ date
- cooling leftovers as quickly as possible and storing them in the fridge
