New affordable homes are being built on the site of the demolished Barn Owl pub in Leyhill Drive in Luton.
The site will hold nine three-bedroom houses and five two-bedroom houses, which will be built as sustainable homes available for affordable rent.
Jephson Housing Association East region is building the 14 houses.
Adrian Sinha from Jephson said: “There is a desperate need for more affordable housing in Luton, with the latest research showing that house prices stand at 8.3 times the average income.
“There is a shortage of sites in this area, so we have to work creatively with Luton Borough Council and maximise the potential of former brownfield sites wherever possible.
“We are looking forward to completing a build which will support our shared commitment to improving the availability of quality, affordable homes for local families.”
Councillor Tom Shaw said the project with Jephson is part of a wider programme of increasing the supply of much-needed affordable housing in Luton.
He said: “This exciting development will see families in real housing need move into decent homes they can afford to live in.
“Demand for affordable housing is unprecedented at the moment and that is why it is so vital that we work with committed partners such as Jephson to come up with creative ways to ease this pressure as best we can.”
